Innes FitzGerald wins 5000m, 80m hammer throw and record-breaking decathlon run on day one
8th August 2025Twice European U20 cross country champion Innes FitzGerald won her first ever international track title, with a dominant performance to win the women’s 5000m at the Tampere 2025 European Athletics U20 Championships on Thursday (7).
She will now look to Friday's 3000m heats and maintaining her push for a distance double. Elsewhere at Tampere 2025, Poland’s Hubert Troscianka closed off first day of the decathlon with the fastest over 400m recorded by an U20 in a decathlon to establish an overnight lead.
There was a sensational throw of 80.68m by Hungary's Armin Szabados in the men's hammer qualifying, it is only the fourth time ever the U20 hammer has been thrown beyond 80 metres.
Record-breaking Italian 15-year-old Kelly Doualla Adimo scorched through to the women's 100m final and Czechia's European U18 champion Michal Rada eased through the men's 400m hurdles heats.
