Germany and Denmark enjoy golden start at Bergen 2025
18th July 2025A German medal sweep in the women's shot put and a thrilling sprint finish in the men's 10,000m ensured a superb start for the Bergen 2025 European Athletics U23 Championships, which began on Thursday (17).
Nina Chioma Ndubuisi took gold ahead of teammates Jolina Lange and Helena Kopp, sparking German celebrations in the women's shot put final.
And a fascinating men's 10,000m came to a thrilling climax with Denmark's Joel Ibler Lillesø chasing down Sweden's Jonathan Grahn in the closing strides to win by 0.04.
Earlier in the day, Norway's European indoor silver medallist Henriette Jaeger launched her ambitious medal campaign across three sprints events by winning her 400m heat in style.
European medallists Angelina Topic, Adriana Vilagos (both Serbia) and Bulgaria's European indoor champion Bozhidar Sarâboyukov all impressed in qualification.
Middle distance pre-race favourites Audrey Werro and Stefan Nillessen safely progressed into the women's 800m and men's 1500m finals respectively, as Croatia’s Roko Farkaš claimed the overnight lead after day one of the decathlon.
Mika Sosna and Steven Richter set the scene for more German throws success, heading the qualifiers in the men's discus.
Ten gold medals up for grabs on day 2
Nine finals and the conclusion of the men's decathlon take centre stage on day 2 of the Bergen 2025 European Athletics U23 Championships on Friday (18).
