Jefferson-Wooden and Seville claim 100m crowns on day of firsts in Tokyo

14th September 2025

All six winners on day two at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 earned their first ever individual gold medals at the World Championships in another sold out evening at the Japan National Stadium.

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden stole the show, producing a dominant run to win the women's 100m and breaking the championship record with 10.61. Oblique Seville delivered on the promise he'd shown for years, taking the men's 100m crown in a PB of 9.77.

Peres Jepchirchir, winner of the Olympic title here four years ago, took the women's marathon gold in a thrilling finish.

On the field, US duo Tara Davis-Woodhall and Valarie Allman lived up to expectation to take the long jump and discus titles respectively. And there was a shock win for Jimmy Gressier in the men's 10,000m.

Featured athlete: Julia Paternain

When Julia Paternain crossed the finish line of the women’s marathon at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25, she was not thinking about medals. She was not even sure she had finished the race.

“I was terrified that wasn’t the finish,” she said later, laughing at her own disbelief. “I still thought maybe there was another 400 metres to go. I could not believe it. One of the officials had to tell me I was done.”

What she also did not know in that moment was that she had just rewritten Uruguay’s sporting history. In only her second marathon, the 25-year-old finished third in 2:27:23, claiming the country’s first ever medal at a senior global championships.
