Great Britain's Scanes wins first gold of Rieti 2026, as Doualla shines in 100m

The Rieti 2026 European Athletics Championships got underway on Thursday (16) with a brilliant gold for Great Britain's Joseph Scanes.
The 17-year-old judged it to perfection to outsprint German duo Maximilian Rath and Jonathan Albustin to win the men's 3000m in 8:09.19.
Italy's big sprint hope Kelly Doualla cruised through the women's 100m heats, Finland's Alisa Launonen took charge of the women's heptathlon and there was an impressive performance by Cypriot Marina Hadjicosta in qualification for the women's discus final.
Day 2 features the men's and women's 100m finals, men's and women's hammer finals and the women's shot final. All live streamed on the European Athletics website.
