Birmingham 2026: Inaugural Awards for Best Article and Best Photograph

European Athletics and AIPS Europe (the European section of the International Sports Press Association) are pleased to announce the launch of an awards competition recognizing the best article and the best photograph produced during the European Athletics Championships, to be held in Birmingham (UK) from 10 to 16 August 2026.
Accredited journalists covering the championships will be individually invited to take part in the competition.
This initiative is a first for both European Athletics and AIPS Europe, which aims to strengthen its relationship with international sports federations, beginning with the leading Olympic sport.
The winners will be selected by a six-member jury comprising two representatives from European Athletics, two representatives from AIPS Europe, and two current or former athletes jointly appointed by both organizations.
Through this initiative, European Athletics reaffirms its appreciation for the work of journalists covering athletics, particularly during the continent's flagship athletics event.
The competition also provides an opportunity for AIPS Europe to highlight its mission of defending the working conditions of sports journalists.
The award winners will be honoured at the European Athletics Annual Gala, which will take place on 24 October in Lausanne.
On the sidelines of the Championships, AIPS, AIPS Europe and European Athletics will also pay tribute to journalists who have covered at least ten European Athletics Championships during a special ceremony organized by European Athletics.
