by 22nd October 2026
The Polish city of Torun has been awarded the 2029 European Athletics Indoor Championships at the 181st European Athletics Council Meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland on Thursday (22).
This will be the second time Torun has hosted the biennial championships this decade having also staged the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships in spite of the severe restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Torun also hosted the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships, an event which was highlighted by two world records, six championship records and 12 world leading performances.
European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov said: "We are delighted to award the 2029 edition of the European Athletics Indoor Championships to Torun, a city which has become synonymous with indoor athletics over the last decade and more.
"Many of us will remember 2021 when the event had to take place behind closed doors as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic and we remember the tireless planning and organisation it took for the event to go ahead in any capacity.
"Thankfully, the 2029 championships will offer a very different experience for the athletes with spectators able to return to the stands.
"We know Polish fans are some of the most passionate and enthusiastic athletics fans in Europe and I think we can safely predict that demand for tickets will be extremely high."
European Athletics CEO Christian Milz added: "The organisers presented an exceptionally detailed, thorough and high quality bid to the Council. We are naturally very pleased to allocate the 2029 European Athletics Indoor Championships to Torun.
"We have assigned many of our upcoming major events to Poland, including our next edition of the European Athletics Championships in Silesia in early June 2028.
"This is because Poland has an excellent track record of hosting major athletics championships and delivering events to the highest standards.
"We are confident Torun will build on this fine tradition in 2029 and host another excellent edition of the European Athletics Indoor Championships but this time in front of capacity crowds."
The 2029 European Athletics Indoor Championships will take place in the Kujawsko-Pomorska Arena Torun which staged both the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships and the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships as well as the Copernicus Cup, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold event since 2017.
Three world records have been set in this arena, including the first of Armand Duplantis' 15 world records in the pole vault when he cleared 6.17m in February 2020.
Duplantis was among the gold medallists at the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships when he cleared a championship record of 6.05m.
Other notable performances included Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen winning a 1500/3000m double and Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson and Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh winning their first senior titles in the 800m and high jump respectively.
Reacting to the announcement, Polish Athletics Association President Sebastian Chmara said: "The selection of Poland as the host for the 2029 European Athletics Indoor Championships is a testament to the trust placed in us by European Athletics.
"By regularly hosting major World Athletics and European Athletics events in recent years, we have established ourselves as a continental leader in the organisation of track and field events.
"Following the outdoor championships, to which we will welcome athletes in June 2028, we will have the honour and pleasure of hosting them in Poland once again just over six months later.
"In doing so, Torun will reaffirm its standing in the global and European athletics landscape, not only as the host of the prestigious Copernicus Cup and numerous national events but above all, as an organiser of world-level and European-level championships. There is currently no other indoor athletics hub in the world as strong as this! It is a source of great pride."
The Mayor of the City of Torun Pawel Gulewski added: "Thank you for entrusting Torun with the organisation of the 2029 European Athletics Indoor Championships.
"This honour confirms the strong position of one of Poland’s most renowned cities on the global athletics map. The success of the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Torun has already demonstrated our ability to host top-tier events.
"We will deliver another outstanding championship, providing excellent conditions for the athletes and a thrilling sporting experience for the fans. Torun, Poland and the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 2029? It sounds great!"
The 2027 European Athletics Indoor Championships will be held in Valencia, Spain from 4-7 March.
