"Eyeball to Eyeball" Confrontation

To all Referees, Club Managers, Secretaries and Players of the Strathclyde Saturday Morning League.

A point was recently raised by one of our member clubs at the last league meeting as to how Referees would approach the new guideline brought in by The Scottish Amateur Football Association and indeed where teams now stand with the situation.

The new guideline brought in by The Scottish Amateur Football Association to their Disciplinary Procedures was in the instance that two players were to confront each other . The SAFA have divided these situations into two categories – “eyeball to eyeball confrontation” and “head to head confrontation”.

Please note that this new SAFA guideline does NOT change anything with regard to the way a Referee should now construe this instance in a match as to how he construed the instance in seasons bygone. This is because the guideline is NOT an update to Law 12: Fouls and Misconduct by the International Football Association Board but a guideline ONLY to The Scottish Amateur Football Association’s own disciplinary procedures when they are determining the punishment in Violent Conduct disciplinary cases.

John Wallace

Referee Co-ordinator

The Strathclyde Saturday Morning League.

League Meeting

The first League Meeting of the Season will take place at Hampden Park on Tuesday 4th August at 7pm.

This has been brought forward to make the draw for the League Cup. This will be on a Sectional basis with 8 groups of  Clubs drawn from 4 "regional" pots. Clubs will play each other once with the top two qualifying for the last 16 knockout. Ties will take place on the 15th, 22nd & 29th August, together with the two intervening midweeks. League games and the knockout stages of the League Cup will commence thereafter.

The second installment of League Subscriptions of £140 is due along with any outstanding dues from last Season. A note of these will be emailed out over the weekend. Clubs paying cash are asked to enclose the money in an envelope with the Club's name on it as this makes the Treasurer's life significantly easier. Cheques should be made payable to "SSMFL". There will be the usual £5 sweep.

Player Registration Forms will be collected by the Registration Secretary and additional blank Registration forms will be available.

League Cup Final 2008-09

Congratulations to South Camlachie Youth Partnership who clinched the first Trophy of the Season by coming from behind to win 2-1 over Greenhills Dynamo. The Final was hosted by Cumbernauld United at Guy's Meadow.

NC United
NC United have sadly withdrawn from the Strathclyde Saturday Morning League Division One.  As they had not completed two-thirds of their fixtures their results are therefore void as set out in the Constitution.

NC United joined the League in Season 2005/06 and took the Division Three Title in their innaugural Season. They followed this with promotion as Division Two Champions in 2007/08. I had the pleasure of presenting them with the Divisional Trophy at Lochinch on both occasions and it is sad that their first Season in Division One has come to a premature end.

It is always disappointing to see a Club fold, particularly when they have made such a welcome contribution to the League. I appreciate from my own Club's past experience the difficulties in running a Club and would thank the former management and players and wish you all the best for the future.

William Rutherglen
Chairman

Scottish Cup First Round

Seven SSMFL Clubs were drawn in the First Round and all faced difficult ties against experienced opposition. Greenhills Dynamo secured the biggest margin of victory with a 7-1 demolition of Cumbernauld Clyde, Blochairn won 5-2 over Clyde Naval Base with ICC and Ravenscraig overcoming Bellaire and Calderglen by a two goal margin. County Thistle went down to four second half goals against Eaglesham, Shawbridge were edged out 4-3 by Newton Mearns Rovers and DTI went down 3-1 to Ardrossan CR.

Scottish Cup Second Round

4th October: Eight ties survived the weather which saw an even split of four Clubs progressing to Round 3 and four Clubs going out. Greenhills Dynamo scored seven again, this time without reply from their opponents, Roseneath and they were joined by Blochairn Star, Firhill United and Airdrieonians who overcame Orchard Park Mount 'A', Fenwick Thistle and Duncanrigg. Tynecastle and Cambuslang Cosmos went down by the odd goal to Avondale and Leven Valley Juniors while Victoria Park and Cumbernauld Town lost out to Galston United and Bannerman.

11th October: Poor weather meant only two ties went ahead and there were disappointments for both Greenbank United and AFC Ravenscraig who went out to Mearns Amateurs and Inverclyde.

18th October: All four Clubs went out with AS Airdrie going down 4-3 to Calderbank United, ICC 4-2 to Eastfield, Kelvinbank Star 6-3 to Hamilton FP and East Kilbride Town 3-1 to West End Villa.

Scottish Cup Third  Round

1st November: Another wipe-out with Firhill United suffering a 10-0 defeat at the hands of Inverclyde and Airdrieonians a 5-0 defeat by Arthurlie United. Blochairn Star's run ended more narrowly with a 4-3 loss away to Partick West.

8th November: The League's last remaining representative, Greenhills Dynamo suffered an extra time defeat 4-3 away to Stedfast.

West of Scotland Cup Second Round

18th October: There was more disappointment in the West as all three Clubs lost away to strong opposition. East Kilbride YMCA swamped AFC Ravenscraig 7-0 with Victoria Park going down 6-3 in extra time to Cambusnethan Talbot and Cumbernauld Town losing 4-2 at Dynamo East Kilbride.

25th October: Only Blochairn Star's tie escaped the weather and they were rewarded with an emphatic 6-0 win over Loudon.

1st November: Tynecastle lost out to Donaldsons 4-3 but County Thistle won on their travels 3-0 away to Abronhill Intrans.

8th November: AS Airdrie were edged out away by Bannermans 4-3 after extra time.

15th November: East Kilbride Accies lost out to Rhu United 3-1 while East Kilbride Town went down 8-1 to Moodiesburn Red Star. Firhill United also bit the dust with a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Renfrew Thistle.

22nd November: Cambuslang Cosmoswent down 7-2 to Hurlford.

West of Scotland Cup Third Round

15th November: Blochairn Star's run came to a halt in a 5-1 away defeat by Galston.

22nd November: County Thistle kept the League's flag flying with a 4-0 victory over Ardrossan CR.

Scottish Amateur Cup
1st Round:
Five Clubs were drawn in the 1st Round with Victoria Park the sole victors thanks to a 2-1 defeat of Rapid United from the Paisley & District League. Kelvinbank Star were edged out 6-5 by Carrick Amateurs while Blochairn Star, Windlaw and Skye Wanderers went down having been drawn away to strong opposition.

2nd Round: A further ten Clubs joined Victoria Park in the 2nd Round. Airdrieonians 5-0 defeat of AFC Columba from the GDSML was the most emphatic but there were also excellent wins for Clydebank Thistle against Tarbert Ams, AS Airdrie over Kirkintilloch Ams and Riverside over Johnston Thistle. Firhill United joined them in the 3rd Round after drawing 3-3, then 2-2 with Ardrossan Castle Rovers before finally winning on penalties. Sadly departing at the 2nd Round stage were Baillieston Villa, Kelvinbridge, Greenhills Dynamo, Victoria Park, Shawbridge and Whinhall United.

3rd Round: Airdrieonians and Riverside kept the League flag flying with excellent wins over Ayrshire opponents, Airdrieonians over Irvine Thistle (1-0) and Riverside over Monkton Thistle (7-5). AS Airdrie went down 4-2 (aet) in their replay their Lanarkshire derby against Woodhall Thistle after a 1-1 draw. Sadly Clydebank Thistle and Firhill United went down to Lumphinnans United and Rhu respectively.

4th Round: Airdrieonians were on the wrong end of a 5-1 scoreline against Kennoway while Riverside meet Castlemilk Amateurs.

West of Scotland Cup

1st Round: Airdrieonians, Kelvinbridge and Victoria Park were all drawn in the 1st Round with only Victoria Park progressing with a 3-2 victory over Kirkintilloch Miners Welfare. Airdrieonians went down 3-4 to Inverclyde with Kelvinbridge going down to former SSMFL members Clydebank Rovers.

2nd Round: Victoria Park’s reward was to draw Tynecastle (in the first all SSMFL tie I can recall) with Tynecastle going through 4-1. Blochairn Star overcame Lanarkshire League leaders Overtown Thistle 2-1 while AS Airdrie won 3-2 against Erskine Bridge. Firhill United continued their tradition of drawing with Ayrshire Clubs, this time 2-2 with Carrick only to lose out on penalties. Clydebank United lost 1-0 to Cumbernauld Thistle from the Central League while Clydebank Thistle went down to Rhu of the Caledonian League. Skye Wanderers lost ou 3-1 away to Uddingston Anvil.

3rd Round: AS Airdrie advanced into the 4th Round thanks to an impressive 2-1 victory away to Rolls Royce EK while Tynecastle went down 5-2 to Bannockburn in a narrower game than the scoreline would suggest. Blochairn Star's involvement ended after extra time 5-4 against Beith.

4th Round: AS Airdrie play Drumchapel United away on 15th December.

New Fixture Arrangements
We will split fixture setting by Division for the foreseeable future. It is best that the person doing the Division has no involvement in it so Stephen Culbertson will do Division One, John Paul McDougall Divisions Two and John McFarlane Division Three.

I have emailed round an amended spreadsheet of games played and the home lets up to Christmas. CHECK THAT THE HOME LET WEEKS ARE CORRECT AS HOME GAMES WILL BE SET BY WHAT'S IN THE SPREADSHEET.

The Fixtures will be drafted for a few weeks in advance but the League reserves the right to change them due to Cup Ties etc. This should give enough notice to cancel parks and give John Wallace a decent time to allocate referees. Clubs would still contact referees as at present and if your referee is not available text John on 07835 222066.

For the moment Clubs will continue to text me the Results and I will update the Tables.

October League Meeting
The next full League Meeting involving all Clubs will be held on Monday 8th October at Hampden Park. It will commence at 7 p.m. This Meeting is being called by the Executive Committee as a Special General Meeting in order to elect two additional Committee Members to new posts on the Executive Committee:

John McFarlane: Assistant League Secretary

John Wallace: League Observer

John McFarlane has held various posts on Amateur Football Committees in the UK and abroad. He approached us about becoming involved in the administration of the League and we will benefit from the knowledge gained from his broad experience in the game.

John Wallace has played and refereed in the League for many years before injury has sadly curtailed his involvement. He brings a direct knowledge and experience of the League and will be a further Committee Member who is unburdened by a role with a member Club and therefore able to independently observe and report on Clubs and Match Officials.

Fixtures
Clubs are reminded that fixtures are listed for every Saturday that parks are available, including holiday weekends. If a Club is seeking a free week this must be done so in writing, ideally 14 days in advance. The Executive have recently awarded points and declared matches as unfulfilled fixtures where less than 7 days notice was given.

The final Saturday of 2007 with scheduled fixtures will be 15th December with fixtures recommencing in 2008 on Saturday 12th January. There will be scheduled fixtures at Easter.

Player Registration & Teamlines
We will be checking random samples of Teamlines against the lists of Registered players. Where Clubs have breached the Player Registration regulations appropriate action will be taken by the League. In addition fines will be imposed where Teamlines fail to provide full player and address details or do not have James Mullen’s address on the reverse page.

Clubs are reminded that Teamlines should be given to the referee prior to kick off. Referees will be instructed that games can only commence when Teamlines are available and the offending Club will be held responsible for any late kick off.

Disciplinary
There are some Clubs who’s Disciplinary Points Totals are of concern, even at this early stage in the Season. This is a situation that we will continue to monitor and Clubs should be aware that it is not one that will be tolerated if it continues.
