Joe Paterson Trophy 2005

Joe Paterson Memorial Trophy - Saturday 4th June
PENALTIES DECIDE 25th PATERSON MEMORIAL TROPHY MATCH
Argyll Select 1   Scottish AFL 1
Scottish AFL won 5-4 on penalties

THE annual fixture for the Joe Paterson Memorial Trophy between an Argyll Select and a Scottish Amateur League Select took place at Mossfield Stadium, Oban, on Saturday 4th June with Argyll losing 5-4 in the penalty shoot-out, after the teams had finished level at 1-1 after ninety minutes.
Young Craig Slowie from Campbeltwon Boys put Argyll ahead with a well taken goal, but the SAFL side equalised before the interval when they were awarded a penalty by referee Donnie Brooks, much to the disbelief of the Argyll contingent. Mark MacCallum was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box which seemed a rather harsh decision. Greenock's Paul Hammill took the spot kick and scored.
Both teams tried hard to break the deadlock in the second half but the game finished all square, so it was down to the dreaded penalty shoot-out. Paul Hammill, Nicky Rodgers, Ryan Lever, Gary Sheridan and Chris Connolly all scored for the SAFL while Craig Colville, Craig Houston, Allan Sinclair and Norrie Thomson netted for Argyll. The unlucky Argyll player whose spot kick was saved by Chris Connolly was Alex Grindlay. This result makes the score 13-12 in Argyll's favour.
To mark the 25th anniversary of the game, Dorothy Paterson, Joe's daughter, who now lives in Inveraray, was invited as the special guest, along with Scottish Amateur Football Association President Jack Keating.
The excellent after-match reception was held in The Oban Bay Hotel where the handsome trophy was presented by Dorothy Paterson to SAFL vice captain Nicky Rodgers. Players from both teams and the three match officials Donnie Brooks, Jim Pearson and Robert Marshall were also presented with mementos of the occasion.
League President Jim Gillespie made a special presentation to Scottish Amateur Football Association President Jack Keating on behalf of the league. Mr Keating is retiring from his post at the AGM in June.
Mr Gillespie and Argyll captain David Dunlop then presented Miss Paterson with gifts from the SAFL and Argyll to mark the 25th anniversary of the Joe Paterson Trophy. In return Dorothy presented Oban Saints goalkeeper David Dunlop with a tankard from his club. David has decided to hang up his gloves for the moment for family reasons after 16 years with the Oban side, although he has agreed to help out if the team require his services.
Match organiser David Buchanan thanked the SAFL party, who were staying in Oban overnight, the match officials as well as Campbeltown Pupils, Campbeltown Boys, Tarbert, Lochgilphead Red Star and Oban Saints who supplied the players for the Argyll Select.
The players and officials then settled down for a night of socialising in the many excellent watering holes in Oban.
