WITH Clark Drive pulling out of the tournament at the last minute only five teams contest the annual Argyll and Bute Cup Tournament.
The competition took place at Glencruitten Parks, Oban, and the teams from Dunoon, Campbeltown Boys, Lochgilphead Red Star, Tarbert and Oban Saints played some excellent football before the host club Oban Saints ran out winners of a hard-fought competition.
The tournment was played on a round robin basis with all the teams playing each other in short, sharp, 40 minute games with the winner being the team with the most points after the ten matches played.
The first game saw last year's champions Dunoon take on Oban Saints, but there was no goals scored in what proved to be a close affair. Tarbert then hosted Campbeltown Boys and this match also ended up in a draw 1-1, with both goals coming from the penalty spot. Robert McGarrie netting for the Boys and Michael Connor equalising for the Dookers.
Saints then took on Campbeltown Boys with the hosts winning by the only goal of the game scored by Keith Millar and what a cracker it was. The Mid Argyll derby between Red Star and Tarbert was next on the agenda with the side from Lochgilphead winning 2-0 thanks to a Neil Russell double.
Dunoon took Red Star in the next match with the points being shared in a a 1-1 draw. Asen scoring for Star and George MacDonald netting for the Cowal team. The highest scoring match of the day featured Saints and Tarbert with all the action taking place in th first half. Keith Millar (2), Sean Ford and Allan MacKay put Saints 4-0 in front, but Malcolm McIver scored a consolation goal for the Dookers.
Red Star and Saints fought out a goal-less draw then goals from David Murphy and Stewart MacIntyre gave Dunoon a 2-0 win over the Boys.
With Saints finished and sitting on eight points both Dunoon and Red Star could equal that points total, but both could only draw their last games - Red Star 0-0 with the Boys and Dunoon 1-1 against Tarbert which meant that Oban Saints won the tournament by two points from Red Star and Dunoon.
Tournament organiser David Buchanan thanked all the teams for their continued support of the competition, the four match officials Donnie Brooks, David Mitchell, Alan MacGregor and Kevin Summers. He then introduced Argyll and Bute Councillor Roddie McCuish who handed over the trophy to Saints captain Bertie Gemmell as well presenting the Saints and Red Star players with their winners and runners-up medals.
The player of the tournament award, chosen by the referees, was won by Dunoon's George MacDonald.
