THE 14th annual Keyline Cup Tournament took place at Mossfield and Glencruitten Park on Saturday 14th July, 2007, with the handsome trophy being won by Scottish Second Division team Alloa Athletic.
Dundee United manager Craig Levein paid the competition a great compliment by sending a full squad of first team players to Oban along with a couple of foreign trialists the wanted to have a look at.
The competition, sponsored by Keyline Builders Merchants takes the form of a round robin competition with all the teams playing each other in short, sharp 30 minute games, ideal for pre-seson match fitness.
The first games kicked off with Oban Saints and St Johnstone playing on Mossfield with the Oban lads getting a well deserved draw thanks to a Joe Lopez equaliser after Steven Kerr had put the Saints from Perth in front, while Dundee United and Hamilton Accies fought out a goal-less draw at Glencruitten.
The third game between Alloa and Hearts also ended in a 1-1 draw. Derek Ferguson netting for the Wasps and Matej Rapnik scoring for the Jambos. The host club then took on Dundee United with the SPL side proving just too strong, although Saints played very well before going down 2-0 in the end to goals from Eric Guei and Johnny Russell.
Hamilton Accies were next in action against Alloa with the Wasps winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Steve McKeown and Andy Ferguson which was followed by Hearts defeating St Johnstone 1-0 with a Ricky Visconte strike.
One of the best games of the day featured Oban saints and Hamilton Accies with the amateurs from Oban winning 2-1 thanks to to a well taken free kick from Sean Ford and a brilliant solo run from deep in his own half by John Carmichael resulting in a great goal. Tony Stevenson also netted a cracker for the Accies.
St Johnstone lost 2-0 to Alloa with goals from Chris Mackie and Andy Ferguson, then the young Hearts team held Dundee United to a 1-1 draw with United scoring both goals in the match. An own goal by Jani Struan gave Hearts the lead, but Lee Wilkie equalised with a header.
Hamilton edged out St Johnstone 1-0 thanks to a goal from Calum Hendry, then Alloa and Dundee United fought out a 0-0 draw.
The next game featured Hearts and Oban Saints with the Oban lads fully deserving their 0-0 draw aginat the SPL side. Dundee United proved too strong for St Johnstone with the Arabs winning 2-0 with goals from Prince Bauben and Noel Hunt.
The last two matches in the tournament saw Alloa Athletic defeat Oban Saints by the only goal of the game scored by Scott Buist and Hearts dumped Hamilton Accies 2-0 thanks to goals from David Templeton and Mark Cowan which meant that Alloa Athletic won the tournament with Dundee United pipping Hearts for second place.
After the competition all the playes and officials were entertained at a reception in Oban Lorne Rugby Club where tournament organiser David Buchanan thanked the sponsors, teams and the nine match officials for making it a superb day of football for the big crowd of spectators who attended from all over Scotland.
David then invited Argyll and Bute Councillor Roddie McCuish to hand over the trophy and medals to the 2007 winners Alloa Athletic and runners-up Dundee United.
