Argyll and Bute Cup - 2005

CLARK DRIVE OFF WITH THE A & B CUP

Clark Drive from Irvine won the 2005 Argyll and Bute Cup Tournament held in Oban on Saturday 6th August

GLENCRUITTEN Parks, Oban, was the venue for  the annual Argyll and Bute Cup Tournament held on Saturday 6th August, 2005. The competition took place under sunny blue skies with the eight teams divided into two sections of four with the top two in each section qualifying for the semi finals.
With only seven Argyll and Bute teams taking part this year, the organisers are grateful to Irvine club Clark Drive for stepping in at the last minute to make up the vacancy in Section Two.
The first games kicked off at 10.30 am with cup holders Oban Saints defeating Tarbert 2-0 thanks to goals from Polish striker Pawel Tomczak and Sean Ford. Saints Under 19s were next in action, but they lost to Dunollie by the only goal of the game scored by Stephen Paterson.
Lochgilphead Red Star have Neil Russell to thank for the only goal of the game as they defeated Campbeltown Boys 1-0. Dunoon then took on Clark Drive, and it was the men from Ayrshire who came out on top 3-1 thanks to goals from Steven Morrison, Billy Gilmour and Paul Ottoway, with George MacDonald netting for Dunoon.
Campbeltown Boys had a narrow 1-0 win over Tarbert thanks to a well taken goal from Gary Grumoli. Two Billy Gilmour goals gave Clark Drive a 2-0 win over Dunollie.
On Pitch 2 Oban Saints and Red Star fought out a goalless draw, but in the other match Saints Under 19s had a great 4- 1 win over Dunoon thanks to a brace apiece from Myles McAulay and Donald Campbell. Scorer for Dunoon was Brian Loughlin.
Oban Saints then took on Campbeltown Boys and only a last minute penalty from Allan MacKay gave them a share of the points after Gary Grumoli had put the men from the Wee Toon in front. Clark Drive then had to fight all the way to defeat Saints Under 19s 1-0 thanks to a goal from Billy Gilmour.
The last two section games saw Dunollie defeat Dunoon 1-0 with the only goal of the game being scored by Stephen Paterson. The Mid Argyll derby between Tarbert and Red Star ended in a 2-1 win for the Dookers thanks to goals from Duncan MacDougall and Alex Johnston. Luke Naisby netted Red Star's consolation.
This last result meant that Campbeltown Boys and Red Star finished with the same points, goal difference and number of goals scored so penalties were required to see who would go through to the semi final. Red Star won the penalty shoot-out 4-3.
The semi-final line-up was Oban Saints v Dunollie and Clark Drive v Red Star. Unfortunately there was no goals scored in either of the semis so it was down to the dreaded penalty shoot-out with Dunollie defeating Oban Saints 5-4 and Clark Drive edging out Red Star 4-2.
The final itself proved to be an exciting game with Clark Drive coming out on top by the odd goal in three thanks to strikes from Ross Davidson and Kevin Reid. Colin Tindall was on target for Dunollie.
Tournament organiser David Buchanan said it was a great competition and thanked all the teams for taking part as well as a special mention for the match officials Donnie Brooks, Steve Reed, John Mackie, David Mitchell, Alan MacGregor and David Dunlop before handing over the runners-up medals to Dunollie and winners medals and the Argyll and Bute Cup to Clark Drive. Sandy Wylie from the Ayrshire team was voted Player of the Tournament by the referees.

Dunollie reached the final of the Argyll and Bute Cup for the first time.
